Music

‘Music is Life itself.’ – Louis Armstrong

Music Intent

The creation and performance of music is vital for the development of a child’s imagination, self-reflection, and confidence. We aim for the profile of music to be high throughout the school, with quality music lessons being taught across all year groups. Children will be exposed to a variety of musical styles, genres, and vocabulary and be allowed regular opportunities to discuss and reflect upon the music that they hear. Children will begin to develop an appreciation of song patterns and structures, and will be afforded greater opportunities to pursue musical interests and talents in later life. Perhaps most importantly of all, music lessons will be fun, and children will understand that creativity, experimentation and enjoyment are the primary objectives of the subject.

An outstanding music pupil needs:

  • To be enthusiastic and eager to experiment.
  • To listen and pay attention to detail.
  • To be brave and proud of their achievements.
  • To be creative.
  • To have a good understanding of genre and musical theory.
  • To be resilient and patient.
  • To be able to work well within a team.

Key Concepts taught through our Music curriculum

Our Music curriculum has been sequenced so that children build upon their knowledge during each successive year. Central to this experience are the ‘interrelated dimensions of music’ (Pulse, Rhythm, Pitch, Dynamics, Tempo, Timbre, Structure, Texture, and Notation). These ‘interrelated dimensions’ will be referred to throughout a child’s time at Rice Lane, and are at the heart of every lesson:
